Description:
Imruza contains Azathioprine, an immunosuppressive antimetabolite used to prevent organ transplant rejection and to manage autoimmune diseases. Azathioprine interferes with purine synthesis, inhibiting DNA and RNA synthesis in rapidly dividing cells, such as T and B lymphocytes, leading to reduced immune response.

Indications:

• Prevention of kidney, liver, and heart transplant rejection (as part of immunosuppressive regimens)

• Management of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis), and autoimmune hepatitis

• Other off-label autoimmune or inflammatory conditions, as prescribed by the physician

Dosage & Administration:

• Dosage should be individualized based on patient condition, indication, and clinical response.

• Typically administered orally once daily with food to minimize gastrointestinal upset.

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to azathioprine or any tablet component

• Pregnancy and breastfeeding (unless the potential benefit outweighs the risk)

• Severe bone marrow suppression

Precautions:

• Regular monitoring of complete blood counts (CBC), liver function tests, and renal function is essential.

• Increased risk of infection, malignancy (especially lymphoma and skin cancer), and hematologic toxicity.

Side Effects:

• Common: Nausea, vomiting, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, anemia, rash
