Description:
Mezest® contains mesalamine, an anti-inflammatory drug used primarily in the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases. Mesalamine works locally in the colon to reduce inflammation and is structurally related to salicylates.
Indications:

Ulcerative colitis (UC):

Treatment of mild to moderate active UC.

Maintenance of remission in UC.

Other inflammatory bowel conditions as directed by a physician.
Mechanism of Action:
Mesalamine acts locally on the colonic mucosa to inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory mediators, such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes, through the inhibition of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways.
Dosage and Administration:
Dosage depends on the severity of the disease and physician recommendation.
Typical maintenance doses:

40 mg tablets: Used in pediatric dosing or mild cases as directed.

160 mg tablets: For higher dosing requirements, administered as per clinical judgment.
Tablets should be swallowed whole, not crushed or chewed, to ensure proper drug release.
Contraindications:
